I would personally recommend getting the MYSQL server,http://dev.mysql.com/, google/yahoo est' use this database server for there search engines, which cannot be bad. Also in the version 5 there is store procedures and triggers which for more main stream developement environments a much required addition.
There are two types of licence (dual) one is for business (which is for mainly support and where MYSQL get most of there money from) and open source, which means that it is free.
