IBM has created an server that will be able to communicate with the XMPP (eXtensible Messaging and Presence Protocol) and longer term protocol SIP (Session Initiation Protocol). The XMPP is used by GoogleTalk, Jabber open IM protocols (which in turn is what GoogleTalk is based on).
This is because the IBM sever (IBM Sametime instant messaging) / gateway is able to work with ICQ / AIM / GoogleTalk, as the main protocols/IM, but not MSN/Live from Microsoft. IBM have said that they do not need to have the IM with MSN/Live to have everyone to communicate over there gateway.
