Analog Clocks: Half-hours

Sometimes it's **too early** to go to bed at 8:00, but **too late** to go to bed at 9:00.

Wouldn't it be nice if you could go to bed some time **in between**?

That's why we have **half hours!**

⏰ Remember how there are **60 minutes in an hour? **

That means half an hour is **30 minutes. **(30 is half of 60).

**Half an hour **is exactly in the middle of an hour.

When the ** long hand** points to **12**, **60 minutes** have gone by.

We write that as "00" on the minute side of the time.

When the** long hand** points to **6**,** 30 minutes** have gone by.

We write that as "30" on the minute side of the time.

Let's say that you go to bed at 8:30.

**8:30 looks like this:**

The **short hand** points at a little past 8. The **long hand** points to 6.

🌟The **short hand **tells us that the hour is 8.

🌟The **long hand**** **tells us that it's 30 minutes after 8:00.

**8:30 **is halfway between 8:00 and 9:00.

Sometimes you're not yet hungry at 12:00,

so you have lunch at 12:30 instead.

**12:30 looks like this:**

The **short hand** points at a little past 12. The **long hand** points to 6.

🌟The **short hand**** **tells us that the hour is 12.

🌟The **long ****hand **tells us that it's 30 minutes after 12:00.

**12:30 **is in between 12:00 and 1:00.

Got it? 👌

Let's say that it's 3:00. You're going to catch up with a friend half an hour later. What time will that be?

It's at 3:30!

Start by moving the long hand **halfway** around the clock from 3:00. We stop when we reach 6.

**3:30 looks like this:**

The **short hand** points at a little past 3, the **long hand** points to 6.

🌟The **short hand **tells us that the hour is 3.

🌟The **long hand **tells us that it's 30 minutes after 3.

**3:30 **is between 3:00 and 4:00.

Great job learning to tell the half hour!
